- W4310813369 abstract "This chapter begins by negotiating Black feminist intersectionality theory and politics as a way of framing how Sibikwa has historically engaged gender activisms in its theatre, performance and community-based intervention work. Arguing that Sibikwa has offered a lived intersectional gender politics that is particularly African in design, this chapter focus on three of Sibikwa's theatre works – and with a special focus of the feminist theatre making of Phyllis Klotz. Eschewing working in chronological order, focus is placed firstly, on a case study of Behind Closed Doors a play that evolved over a four-year period (1999 – 2002) which opens up how Sibikwa made space for not just the living gender evolution of whose voices are heard in theatre and how, but of a constant vigilance around who theatre is being made for and of an ongoing search for significant relationships between theatre and the communities it serves. Finally, the chapter connects Klotz's 1986 protest play, You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock, with its 30-year later companion work Chapter Two, Section Nine (1996), offering insight into both Sibikwa and Klotz's profound embodied – and performed – intersectional feminist politics that was/is unafraid to speak (in both form and content) truth to power in connecting identity issues around race, class, gender and sexual orientation/sexuality in South Africa." @default.
