- W4311391274 abstract "This current chapter incorporates an environmentalist approach and uses Rob Nixon’s theory of “slow and fast violence” to frame the impact of racism and xenophobia on Asians in the United States of America (USA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. People who were perceived as Asians in the USA, particularly East Asian–looking, experienced a steep rise in blatant and subtle discrimination almost immediately after the naming of the pandemic. Erroneously associating the causes of infectious disease outbreaks to immigrant communities is, unfortunately, a common occurrence in the USA. As of April 2022, hate crimes and violence against Asians and Asian-looking people increased 300% compared to the start of the pandemic, with one out of five Asians reporting direct experience with overt discrimination. These critical moments of racism can cause marginalized groups to internalize the hate and believe hostile messages about their racial group. Past findings strongly suggest that internalized racism is detrimental to People of Color and can be associated with negative health-related outcomes. Building on the notion of fast and slow violence, we suggest Asians are experiencing a double form of violence during this pandemic, with a steep increase in attention-grabbing blatant attacks and the long-lasting unseen internalization of demeaning and degrading messages. We support the widening and the rethinking of the term violence – particularly, violence of the COVID-19 pandemic – and challenge narrow assumptions about violence as highly visible and event-focused. With this chapter, we join the large-scale efforts to craft equitable responses to this global pandemic for People of Color and other marginalized communities. To this end, we will (1) use the fast and slow violence environmentalist theory to frame the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Asian communities in the USA and put this approach into dialogue with microaggression theory, (2) share our own research on microaggressions and internalized racism to further discuss how this slow violence has implications for health-related outcomes among Asians, and (3) provide recommendations for systemic and interpersonal interventions. Along with blatant acts of racism, we call for scholars to also attend to the uneventful injustices of racism, such as covert microaggressions and internalized hate, that are often postponed or ignored." @default.
