- W4311453048 abstract "Birds are essential ecosystem drivers as they disperse seeds and nutrients, act as scavengers and decomposers, and fulfill prey and predator dynamics. Marsh bird populations have declined due to degenerative practices such as land development, invasive species introduction, and pollution. The National Audubon Society seeks to reverse and stop marsh bird declining populations and is currently working towards understanding how to measure marshland health and composition changes for ecological restoration projects. Wetland composition changes through time can indicate declining or improving health. Interspersion, a metric of land composition, has been used to measure the health of wetlands of interest. Previously, drone imagery was used to calculate wetland interspersion, but due to the large number of sites that need to be covered, many resources are required to collect and process drone data. In this project, Sentinel-2 10-meter resolution imagery and NAIP 0.6-meter resolution imagery were used to evaluate the feasibility of satellite imagery in calculating wetland interspersion rates. The NAIP data set was used to simulate high-resolution satellite imagery. To calculate interspersion, the imagery was classified using a pixel-based method and the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Sentinel-2 imagery was broken down into three classes (i.e., Water, Vegetation, and Other). The weighted normalized difference water index (WNDWI) was used to mask and better classify water for Sentinel-2 imagery. NAIP imagery was divided into five classes (i.e., Water, Vegetation, Mud, Trees/Shrubs, and Other). The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and texture layer were used to increase the classification accuracy of NAIP imagery. Interspersion was calculated by inputting the classified imagery into an R-script utilizing the Interspersion and Juxtaposition (IJI) formula. Sentinel-2 2020 imagery had higher interspersion values than Sentinel-2 2019 imagery, while NAIP 2020 imagery had higher interspersion values than 2019 and 2020 Sentinel-2 imagery." @default.
