- W4311484691 abstract "Increasing professional demands on healthcare providers invites perpetual stress on the body, mind, and spirit. Anxiety, headaches, poor sleep, muscular tension, emotional difficulties, spiritual distress, gastrointestinal complaints, and other concerns are often linked to inadequately managed stress. Repeated external stressors can lead to cognitive and emotional dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, immunocompromise, and can directly correlate to higher levels of burnout, attrition in the workplace, mental health, morbidity, mortality, and other concerns. Honest introspection and evaluation of personal and professional stressors is vital for the healthcare provider hoping to harness the downward spiral of unhealthy stress to create positive lifestyle changes through healthy coping mechanisms. Practical and positive coping strategies are needed to restore whole body balance and reverse the short, and long-term, impact of stressors weighing on modern healthcare providers. Breathing techniques, or breathwork, is a complementary modality that encourages controlled intentional breathing designed to interrupt the cycle of stress and promote the relaxation response. Breathwork is a safe, practical, and easily accessible modality for use in any healthcare setting, daily practice, or during a sudden onset of acute psychological distress. Decreased anxiety, depression, and improved sleep result when healthcare providers practice breathwork to alleviate the effects of stress. Several practical styles of breathwork are highlighted for use in healthcare settings. Evidence base and free online video resources are provided to support the use of this practice for stress management and lifestyle wellness." @default.
