- W4311600266 abstract "Introduction: The workgroup in the most recent Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) guidelines was considered more diverse, with more women and better representation from low-income countries. However, the diversity and representation in the clinical studies supporting the recommendations was not described. Our objective was to evaluate the racial, sex, and geographic representation in the evidence used to derive the infection-related recommendations, as well as to evaluate the sex and geographic representation of authors. Methods: All evidence cited to support the infection-related recommendations was identified. Citations eligible for evaluation included clinical studies and meta-analysis while editorials, reviews, and other guidelines were excluded. For eligible studies, we recorded whether race was described among the patient characteristics, and the proportion of the represented races. We also recorded the sex of study participants, as well as the countries in which the studies were conducted. To evaluate authorship, we recorded the sex and country representation of the primary authors for all included studies. The countries were classified based on the World Bank classification by region and income. Descriptive statistics was used to report the characteristics of the studies and authorship. Results: The SSC guidelines included 21 infection-related recommendations, supported by 133 studies. Of those studies, only 24 reported race, among which White race was the most common (range 25%-88%). The proportion of females in the studies ranged between 2% to 73%. The majority of the research was conducted in high income countries (95%), mostly in Europe (40 %) and North America (37 %). As regards authorship, the majority of the primary authors were males (59%) and from North America (35%) and Europe (31%). Conclusions: Despite the attempt to diversify the committee that produces the guidelines, the evidence to support the recommendations, as well as the authorship of the referenced research, do not include a diverse representation of race, sex, or geography. To promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, efforts should address measures to enhance representation in the evidence supporting international guidelines." @default.
