- W4311657279 abstract "When social movement scholars criticize rational choice theory (RCT) they refer to a narrow neoclassical version of RCT. In recent work by rational choice proponents (e.g. in behavioral economics) a wide version of the theory is advanced. It includes all kinds of goals and beliefs. For example, people may want to benefit others (they are altruistic) and they want to follow norms. Beliefs may be wrong. People do not objectively (from the viewpoint of an observer) maximize utility but do what they think is best for them in the given situation. The following incentives are relevant for social movement participation: grievances, weighted by perceived influence, integration in protest–encouraging groups, and internalized protest norms. RCT is used as a micro foundation for macro propositions. The idea is that macro factors influence the incentives of individual behavior that aggregates to collective action. For example, the problems of climate change (a macro factor) strengthen incentives that instigate individuals to protest (both are micro variables), which aggregates to collective protest. This is the procedure of micro–macro modeling. The final part of the entry demonstrates how the framing, identity, resource mobilization, and political opportunity approaches can be unified and integrated into a structural–cognitive model." @default.
