- W4311875070 abstract "This chapter approaches the global history of disability through a microhistory of the East India Company (EIC) civil servant, William Baillie, exploring how his time in India and Iraq precipitated a lifelong disabling condition. Focusing on how Baillie’s personhood was affected by the perception of disability, the chapter uses an extensive collection of family letters to demonstrate how disability is not always a static identity, ascribed at birth, but could result from significant life experiences, in Baillie’s case a sojourn in “the East.” Correspondence penned by family members and medical attendants, and by Baillie himself, identifies how his mental health perplexed the medical profession in England and Scotland and how clinicians often sought explanation through Baillie’s time in what was, to them, the exotic and alien environment of the Persian Gulf and India. These letters demonstrate the limitations to medical knowledge about his mentally disabling condition and that there were frequent tensions between concerned family members and medical professionals, while William himself strived to retain agency over his life and express himself in different ways. Through these avenues, this chapter contributes to wider understandings of the experience of disability and how it was managed through personal and familial dynamics." @default.
