- W4311900527 abstract "Reading Amrita Pritam’s Dilli Ki Galiyan (Streets of Delhi 1972), Ek Khali Jagah (An Empty Space 1977) and Ek Thi Anita (Anita 1994), the chapter explores the (re)production of upper caste/middle-class women’s sexuality at the interstices between patriarchal, virilocal and patrilineal structures on one hand and legislative adjudicatory framework of the Hindu Code Bill on the other. While Dilli Ki Galiyan is a bold proclamation of women’s right to cultivating their identity as individuals, Ek Khali Jagah and Ek Thi Anita highlight women’s negotiation with the structural inequities of marriage as an institution. In doing so, the novels not simply map the sexual and gendered hierarchies embedded in the socio-cultural mores but also contest the patriarchal biases inherent in the epistemological and institutional structures of the nation-state. They illustrate ways in which familial, communal, and gendered violence are structurally propounded against women, thereby extending the concerns of Pritam’s earlier novel Pinjar (1950) that engages with these themes specifically in the context of the Partition." @default.
