- W4311972749 abstract "“The Philosophy of Strength”: Mussolini reads Nietzsche This chapter deals with Nietzsche’s political thought starting from how it was incorporated by Benito Mussolini, first among others, in his fascist ideology. I will trace the genesis and content of La filosofia della forza (The Philosophy of Strength), a general interpretation of Nietzsche’s thought written by Mussolini in 1908 when he still proclaimed himself a socialist and a Marxist. Particular attention will be given to the markedly proto-fascist tones of this essay and their continuity with subsequent references to Nietzsche, which were formulated during Mussolini’s rise to power and regime. This reconstruction will be accompanied by a deconstruction: I will show how Mussolini’s interpretations were largely based on isolated passages and remixed into arbitrary collages. The increasing exploitation of Nietzsche by the international New Right and, more specifically, the renewed attention dedicated to The Philosophy of Strength by Italian neo-fascists show the urgent need for such deconstructive work. However, if the latter is carried out rigorously - as I argue in the final part of the chapter - it leads to the inconsistency of Nietzsche’s political reflection." @default.
