We here show that a 2D version of the stochastic Wilson–Cowan model, where neuron connections decay exponentially with the distance, is characterized by exponents $$beta $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mi>β</mml:mi> </mml:math> and $$gamma $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mi>γ</mml:mi> </mml:math> markedly different from those of mean field, respectively around 1 and 1.3. The exponents $$alpha $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mi>α</mml:mi> </mml:math> and $$tau $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mi>τ</mml:mi> </mml:math> of avalanche size and duration distributions, equal to 1.5 and 2 in mean field, decrease respectively to $$1.29pm 0.01$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1.29</mml:mn> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.01</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> and $$1.37pm 0.01$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1.37</mml:mn> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.01</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> .
