- W4312229929 abstract "Looking at the field of social work from the perspective of Indigenous knowledge is an interesting enterprise. With this chapter, the authors wish to achieve recognition for Indigenous knowledge as both critical and substantial for intervening in the decolonization of social work studies that is currently underway. Decolonization is a process through which those pained and hurt by colonialization are enabled to voice or express their worldviews, narratives, and stories for analysis, education, research, governance, etc. in their own way. The field of Indigenous knowledge has gained traction, and many scholars have started to embrace its importance in their research and teaching and learning. The chapter considers the field of Indigenous knowledge with the aim of advancing social work practice, teaching, and research. The authors define both fields and demonstrate how these fields could benefit from crossing paths for the advancement of the social sciences with reference to appropriate examples taken from actual lived experiences. For this purpose, the authors used the Afro-sensed approach, which was developed within the Indigenous knowledge paradigm of reflection and enquiry. The authors explain their stance on the use of the Afro-sensed approach and perspective in this case. The Afro-sensed approach argues that African contexts and spaces present unique opportunities in the discourse of knowledge development. While the authors acknowledge the nomothetic characteristics of knowledge, they also realize the importance of its idiographic perspective. In this case, a balance is struck between universal and specific aspects of knowledge development." @default.
