- W4312231216 abstract "Cancer is a complex disease of immortal cells that occurs due to any kind of disruption between cell division and cell death which are the two main phases of cell cycle. Breast cancer (BC) is the third leading cause of death in women among all types of cancers. World health organization (WHO) reported that 2.1 million women are affected by BC every year and about 627,000 women died due to BC in 2018. It is also documented that only 5–10% cases of BC are inherited and the remaining cases occur due to mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 tumor suppressor genes. BC can be classified as hormone receptor-positive (HRP) BC, human epidermal growth factor2 (HER2) positive BC, triple-negative BC, Claudin-low subtype BC, etc. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are reactive chemicals that are produced by both enzymatic and nonenzymatic pathways and play vital role in physiology and pathophysiology of cells. Whenever there is an imbalance between ROS production and destruction, this can lead to various disorders including cancer. It is also observed that ROS levels are very high in cancer cells. These raised ROS affect key characteristics of cancer progression i.e., stimulate the cell proliferation, angiogenesis, invasiveness, and metastasis. Studies have well documented the role of ROS in cancer development and progression and currently therapeutic strategies targeting ROS are also being exercised in clinical practice. Hence there is a need to look deeply into the current status of antioxidants specifically synthetic molecules in the management of breast cancer. In this particular chapter, an attempt is made to provide a critical assessment of antioxidative therapy involving synthetic molecule for the treatment of BC." @default.
