• W4312289786 abstract "<b>Aim:</b> Our aim in this study is to scrutinize the effect of the pandemic on the smoking patterns in the border regions of Turkey where access to cheaper tobacco products is easier. <b>Method:</b> Having obtained a research permit from Hopa District Governorship and approval from our ethics committee, we collected data between July 1 and August 1, 2021, via face-to-face interviews with individuals who are active smokers aged 18 and above, using a single page data collection form containing 26 questions. <b>Results:</b> Of the 204 participants, 75% were male and the mean age was 38.6±11.6 years. The ratio of smokers using non-cigarette tobacco products increased to 6.4% during the pandemic from 3.9%. While the rate of smokers using fine-cut tobacco was 2.5%, this ratio increased to 6.8% after the pandemic; in contrast, tobacco product purchases from duty-free shops decreased to 2.5% during the pandemic from 10.2% before the pandemic, and the ratio of using non-taxed foreign cigarettes decreased to 0% from the 3% before the pandemic (p<0.05). Regarding the amount of tobacco used, 65.2% of the participants reported no change, 21.1% reported increased use and 13.7% reported a decrease in tobacco use. No significant difference was found between the tobacco use during the pandemic and the economic conditions of the participants (p: 0.72). However, the participants who opted for cheaper tobacco products due to soaring tobacco prices experienced economic troubles during the pandemic period (p<0.05). <b>Conclusion:</b> During the pandemic, most of the tobacco users continued their smoking behavior with alternative solutions." @default.
