- W4312389666 abstract "Abstract The Moravians had two remarkable missionaries in the first half of the twentieth century, Traugott Bachmann and Franz Rietzsch. Bachmann was a true follower of Herder (whom he had almost certainly never read) in that he knew local languages and cultures better than any of the other missionaries, and translated the Bible into Nhiha. He not only made recordings for Hornbostel that were transcribed, published and analyzed by comparative musicologists throughout the first half of the twentieth century, but he was also the first missionary to try to introduce African music and dance into the service. Rietzsch worked with the Nyakyusa in Tanganyika from 1931-39, He was invested in the German Singbewegung, a movement that played a central role in the revival of early-music performance and scholarship; and he had a background in comparative musicology. As a result, Rietzsch observed that the tonal system of the Wanyakyusa is derived from overtones over one fundamental and set out to write music for the service in what he called African style. Yet, even though his settings use the pentatonic system of the Nyakyusa, they sound as if they were written in the early fifteenth century." @default.
