- W4312401886 abstract "Whereas many high-income countries (HICs) have seen a decrease in alcohol consumption in recent years, many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have seen an increase. Though these countries experience the highest levels of harm from alcohol, including social, financial, physical, and mental health harms, research on alcohol consumption in LMICs is scarce. While alcohol consumption and cultures are context-specific, patterns of consumption in LMIC contexts can be found. Alcohol is closely linked to poverty, and this association is heavier on poorer countries. In many settings, alcohol consumption is linked to masculine behavior, though women are increasingly consuming alcohol in many settings. Illicit alcohol is common in many LMICs, and in conjunction with oftentimes weak alcohol policies, the control of alcohol is limited. The alcohol industry has a profound interest in LMIC alcohol markets.KeywordsAlcoholLow- and middle-income countriesGender-based violenceAlcohol industryAlcohol policyPovertyIllicit alcoholAlcohol-based researchAlcohol-related harmsAlcohol-related diseases" @default.
