- W4312492423 abstract "This chapter addresses the increasing focus on generating embodied experiences of pain and suffering in contemporary popular Holocaust fiction. As works such as Donna Deitch’s made-for-television adaption of The Devil’s Arithmetic (1999) and John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2006) demonstrate, younger generations are increasingly being primed to access the Holocaust through embodied engagement with its central horrors. The fiction of Heather Morris, additionally—from The Tattooist of Auschwitz (2018) to Cilka’s Journey (2019)—seeks to create an embodied connection to moments of sexualised trauma. This emphasis on embodied experience, as the chapter seeks to demonstrate, does not usefully contribute to our understanding of the Holocaust but rather reduces its victims to inhabitable bodies that have been stripped of their cultural identities along with any accompanying character complexity. Embodied experience, as the chapter demonstrates, places the emphasis purely on the physical invariants that are shared by the reader and the subject being depicted. As such, there is no room for depthful characterisation. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Anna Ellory’s The Rabbit Girls (2019)—a text entirely focused on a purely sexed notion of embodied engagement. We must move away from this emphasis on embodied trauma, the chapter argues, in order to lay the foundations for Holocaust Impiety." @default.
