- W4312497315 abstract "Abstract Chapter 2 begins by exploring the career of Keri Russell, an actor who has gone from playing America’s sweetheart in Felicity to embodying the greatest threat to the West in The Americans. Russell’s Elizabeth Jennings is a fiercely uncompromising Russian spy, which makes her status as “wife” problematic. Unlike Cersei and Daenerys, who gain influence through marriage, Elizabeth’s authority springs from her professionalism and competence, which the show places in direct conflict with her commitment to her husband. The real danger Elizabeth poses in The Americans, then, is less about international espionage and more about the flouting of conventional gender roles. As a Russian operative she may endanger US society, but her autonomy and fearlessness equally threaten the status quo, since they challenge the female vulnerability upon which heterosexual marriage depends. This chapter argues that the show’s structuring tension—between Elizabeth’s unremitting ambitiousness and the Jennings’ love story—reveals the female antihero as incompatible with the marriage plot (although importantly not with motherhood). For this reason, it’s unsurprising that of the ten female protagonists we analyze in this book, Elizabeth is the only wife—Cersei and Daenerys are both widows and the seven other women we examine are single." @default.
