- W4312562263 abstract "The theoretical reflections on concepts related to time from China that I will discuss in this contribution are among the most ancient of their kind, probably rivalled in age only by their ancient Greek counterparts. 1 How can the reflections from a historical perspective so remote from our own contribute to our modern discussions on the concept of time ? I would like to argue that it is not any particular aspect of the ancient theories that we should adopt. I do not think that they had access to a source of knowledge on time that we lack. But studying their theories can reveal something about the topic that we might otherwise miss. My argument is that by comparison of its different historical manifestations we can discern necessities and contingencies within the development of theoretical thought. In other words, one can discover some aspects of theoretical thinking about time that apply across cultures—thus constituting candidates for universals—and other aspects that clearly depend on the specific historical and cultural context in which these reflections were made. The specific source that shall concern us here, passages from the so-called dialectical chapters of the Later Mohist corpus, is particularly well-suited for such an endeavour because it is one of the rare sources of its kind that originated completely separate from the ancient Greek tradition of philosophical reflection that became so influential on theoretical thought in later world history." @default.
