- W4312682693 abstract "Anxiety is an almost ubiquitous experience in high-performance sport. Managing competitive performance anxiety has been a focus of sport psychology for many decades, but more recently, attention has turned to the experience of clinical forms of anxiety in elite athletes. Research demonstrates that athletes report experiencing anxiety symptoms and disorders at rates similar to those observed in the general population, with a range of both sport-related factors and general risk factors associated with anxiety in this population. Anxiety symptoms and disorders can compromise the affected athlete’s mental well-being and psychosocial functioning, and potentially their performance. Assessment and treatment of anxiety and related conditions (such as obsessive-compulsive disorder) need to consider the individual athlete’s physiology and wider psychosocial contexts. This chapter examines the current knowledge on anxiety disorders in athletes, including how specific types of anxiety (such as generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder) may manifest in elite athletes, and how treatment options may be impacted by sport-related considerations." @default.
