- W4312707095 abstract "Abstract A dance and ceremony called sabar has become extremely popular for urban wedding celebrations in Guinea. Conakry sabar, derived from a Wolof (Senegalese) dance genre, features acrobatic jumps, kicks, and twirls, often embellished with sexy provocations and danced mostly by women. Sabar’s rise in Guinea coincided with the liberalization of the country’s economy and the opening of national borders in the wake of state socialism—events that have produced profound uncertainty for average citizens. This chapter explores sabar as a practice that grapples affectively with the social and economic changes neoliberal reform has engendered within Guinea. Sabar ceremonies are characterized by instantiations of excess; including hypersexualized dancing, electric amplification, and theatrical displays of opulence. By examining how excess in sabar pushes the boundaries of the culturally-salient quality of “bigness,” this chapter demonstrates how dancers participate in the active constitution and reformulation of collective value. In contrast with previous ethnographic analyses of Senegalese sabar that treat the dance as a carnivalesque inversion or celebration of female power, this chapter explores the anxiety and frenetic urban desire performed in Conakry’s version of this Senegalese dance practice." @default.
