• W4312719293 abstract "When we set aside the question of replicability of empirical findings, there are still disagreements over the meaning of research findings. The question of meaning is of central importance both in justifying a given line of research and in making inferences from the findings. Nonetheless, questions of meaning are raised far less frequently than questions about replicability. The present chapter offers a general formulation of the problem of interpretation in experimental research, starting with the general structure of experiments, and assumptions about different conditions of an experiment. I highlight how researchers evade confounds (i.e., unintended consequences of their manipulations) with a biased description of the research situation. The bias is typically guided by the researchers’ a priori hypothesis. Moving beyond that initial bias, we find that the question, “What else can the findings mean?” is tied to the question, “What could the situation and the events mean for the research participants?” By neglecting the latter question, researchers can neglect the former. I review several studies in which interpretation is likely to be a hidden confound. When two conditions have different meanings, we cannot claim we are comparing the same type of process across different conditions. Instead, we are faced with qualitatively different processes that are likely intractable with the researchers’ pre-specified categories.
