- W4312746130 abstract "Abstract In this chapter we first meet the famous sophist Protagoras, in the dialogue that bears his name. Under gentle questioning from Socrates, Protagoras volunteers that he teaches how to exercise supreme power in a city, in speech and in deed, but Socrates compels the sophist to say that what he teaches is good citizenship or virtue--something Socrates says he thought was not teachable. We also begin to get a sense of Protagoras' indirect manner of speaking when he delivers his justly famous myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus. The stated purpose of the myth is to establish that virtue, as he understands the term, is teachable, but in fact Protagoras sketches the harsh original condition of human beings by nature and the merely conventional character of political life and hence of justice." @default.
