Aerospace, automobile, chemical and medical industries employ high temperature thermoplastic polymers extensively. Panneerselvam et al. introduced the Friction Vibration Joining (FVJ) process for the joining of polymers. FVJ is an innovative solid-state joining process and a very few researchers have investigated on the FVJ process of joining polymers. Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a high temperature, high strength, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer with a melting point of 343 °C and tensile strength (TS) of 100 MPa. In the present study of FVJ process on PEEK material, investigation is carried out on butt welding of 100% virgin PEEK workpiece of 5.5 mm thickness. The experiments are carried out using a cylindrical High-Speed Steel (HSS) tool of 2 mm diameter. The input process parameters considered in the FVJ process are frequencies of the vibrating tool (14, 18, 22 Hz) and workpiece feed rates (6, 12, 18 mm/min). Statistical method is used to analyse the influence of tool vibrating frequency and workpiece feed rates on the tensile strength. The hardness variation at different regions of the weld is investigated and the defects in the joints are analysed using SEM macrographs.
