This entry presents basic concepts of respiratory toxicology, providing an historical perspective, approaches used to evaluate respiratory tract responses to inhaled chemicals, classification of airborne chemicals, concepts of dose–time relationships, factors influencing the toxicity of airborne substances, the basic biology of the respiratory system with emphasis on those structures and functions that are involved in toxicological responses, biomarkers of pulmonary effects, and concepts of risk assessment for airborne chemicals." @default.
