The monuments, plaques, museums, statues and interpretive centers located at Seneca Falls, Selma and the Stonewall Inn also serve to measure hard-won accomplishments since the formative moment, while reminding everybody about unfinished business. However, the ability of such commemorated birthplaces to secure through preservation and reenactment a particular narrative of the past is permanently precarious. Political issues that inspired the first-generation suffragettes at Seneca Falls in 1848 may not resonate well with feminist movements today (women's right to vote came in 1920). Exclusive attention to Selma selectively emphasizes the role of Martin Luther King, Jr., while unintentionally perhaps diminishing African American civil rights efforts both before and after the fateful events on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, efforts that might provide strategic lessons more useful for today's movement leaders. Gays and lesbians actually present at the Stonewall Inn in June 1969 may not capture the full range of identities and political interests now alive among those with alternative sexual orientations.
