- W4312912866 abstract "Abstract Part 3, “From Tri-faith to Multireligious America,” begins with a chapter showing that pluralist conceptions of American democracy resurged in the late 1950s and early 1960s, even as theological and political conservatives began adopting Judeo-Christian terminology. Decolonization and African-American freedom became pressing concerns, highlighting the question of where rights came from—and, implicitly, who deserved them. Although Martin Luther King Jr. used Judeo-Christian language to call the nation back to its ideals, he combined it with an open-ended, pluralist understanding of which belief systems comported with democracy. Debates over the authenticity of the postwar religious revival, which many critics saw as deeply corrupted by secularism, fueled disputes over the meanings of “Judeo-Christian” and a growing tendency to identify secularists as a discrete group in American life. John Courtney Murray and other liberal Catholics worried that Judeo-Christian rhetoric signaled Protestants’ desire to merge the traditions into a “super-faith.” By contrast, Reinhold Niebuhr came to find that language too exclusive and to argue that American democracy represented the fruitful, if tense, marriage of religious and secular elements. The political scene also shifted after 1960, with the election of John F. Kennedy and Vatican II’s embrace of Murray’s formulation of religious liberty." @default.
