- W4312945811 abstract "Students in the Netherlands undertake labour in the sex industry, or consider doing so, for a variety of reasons. Financial motivations range from the desire to live a luxurious lifestyle to an attempt to minimise debts. The flexible nature of the job enables students to generate an income without compromising their academic achievements. Students also have other intrinsic motivations for working in the sex industry. They like their job and they enjoy spending time with clients. Politically engaged students work as sex workers because this aligns with their feminist viewpoints. Sex work can also be an attractive alternative to precarious labour elsewhere. For most students, stigma is the most significant drawback of their job. Despite the lifting of the ban on brothels in 2000 and the relatively liberal attitude towards sex work in the Netherlands, the stigma of sex work is severe. In this chapter we explore how stigma impacts the lives of the students, and how this relates to their position of being highly educated, predominantly white, and often middle class. Insight into the gendered, classed, and racialised nature of the sex work stigma reveals how students compensate for its negative implications by strategically deploying different aspects of their identities.KeywordsSex workStudentsStigmaHigher education" @default.
