- W4312992087 abstract "In his first contribution to the volume Lutz Berger focuses on the disintegration of the Abbasid Caliphate. He highlights that the change from Umayyad to Abbasid rule was not a change of empire but a change of governance with the introduction of a new imperial elite whose power and influence rested on the Khorassani army. Berger analyses the decline of the Abbasid Empire as a process of about 100 years that started at the middle of the ninth c. It was neither instigated by foreign opponents nor by imperial overstretch but by deterioration of the economic basis of the caliphate. The crucial event was the Zanj rebellion of African slaves in southern Iraq in the second half of the ninth c. which dramatically affected the yields of the richest agrarian region of the empire and the center’s ability to attract the imperial elites to the court by satisfying their ambitions and fostering their careers. At the same time, the caliphate more and more lost its religious charisma whereas the elites started to concentrate and develop their careers along provincial and local levels. This way, the empire slowly got rid of its imperial elites, who forfeited their transregional social cohesion (asabiyya). It was only this growing internal weakness that allowed foreign powers like the Byzantines and the Ghuzz Turks to advance and celebrate success at the deteriorating empire’s cost." @default.
