- W4313010967 abstract "The article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the intangible cultural heritage of two neighboring countries – Belarus and Poland. The fear of infection became a part of the “new normality” for the bearers of traditions on both sides of a border. In this connection the concepts of fear (Beck, Duchliński, Kępiński, Marczewska, Szatan) are used as a theoretical basis for the analysis and the overcoming of fear is associated with strategies for adapting of the intangible heritage, its bearers, local communities and institutions to the situation of the pandemic.
Particular attention is paid to the effect of social distancing measures on living traditions. The significance of the measures is justified by its influence on the continuity of the intangible heritage practices, because of the intangible heritage viability depends on the direct communication of bearers and on the transmission of traditions that were threatened during the epidemiological crisis. These measures are related to the inability to use the usual forms of intangible heritage safeguarding as well. At the same time they stimulate the search for new tools to keep up the traditions.
The strategies of actions in the field of living heritage safeguarding undertaken during the epidemiological threat are revealed based on several Belarusian and Polish traditions and two festivals. There are three models among them. The first one is a model of decontextualization of the traditional practices beyond its usual temporal and spatial frameworks. The second model is connected with a reducing of some dimensions of traditions (temporal, spatial or number of participants). The last model is a resign of support for traditions and the deliberate interruption of their transmission. It is emphasized that these strategies can be used partially and in a mixed form.
It also revealed that efforts to maintain the viability of intangible heritage during the COVID-19 pandemic in Belarus and Poland have both similarities and distinctive features. The differences were formed on the background of different approaches of countries to the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic." @default.
