- W4313012144 abstract "Abstract This chapter examines four evolutionary themes which are relevant to today's workplace: humans evolved in groups, groups are involved in constant warfare, every group has a status hierarchy, and every group has a need to find order and structure in the world. These elements map onto modern times by explaining success as getting along and getting ahead. Understanding individual differences relevant to these two criteria can shed light on many workplace predispositions and seemingly inexplicable research findings in the organizational literature. Individual differences related to surface characteristics such as height, attractiveness, weight, and age affect important outcomes such as income, leadership emergence, and general occupational success. These characteristics are not always directly related to workplace performance; rather they are related to people's reactions to and attributions of others depending on where others stand in regards to these characteristics. These biases and heuristics can be accounted for by different levels of these characteristics being advantageous for human survival and reproduction. Furthermore, a biological understanding also reveals the importance of deep level characteristics: relations to authority, social sensitivity, and competitiveness." @default.
