- W4313013119 abstract "Nature recognizes the co-existence of men and women in the society, but most communities undermine the dominance imposed on them by cultural heritage. In Anaang (New Benue-Congo) culture, the construction of proverbs are exclusive preserves of male adults who exploit them to support their course. According to Umoh (Ufied keed k’usen. One proverb a day. An initiation in the wealth of our Anaang ancestral wisdom, Enugu: SNAAP Press (Nig) Ltd., Umoh, D. A. (2009). Ufied keed k’usen. One proverb a day. An initiation in the wealth of our Anaang ancestral wisdom. Enugu: SNAAP Press (Nig) Ltd), proverbs are traditional tools that strongly authenticate a matter and cannot be challenged except with another proverb(s). This Chapter investigates the use of proverbs (a genre of language) and chauvinism in Anaang society. Data for the research were obtained through participant observations in marriage counselling sessions in three Anaang communities and interviews of nine elderly respondents. Ethnopragmatics was then used to discuss the data. Our findings reveal that men enjoy the domineering status, hence, magnifying negative reactions from the women. The study recommends that male chauvinism should be discouraged in the Anaang society." @default.
