- W4313019227 abstract "Asthma is a complex chronic inflammatory airways disease, and it is increasingly clear that nutrition plays vital roles in the development of asthma and the persistence of symptoms in adulthood. There are multiple benefits of good nutrition, including maintaining a healthy body weight, in decreasing the risk and severity of asthma. This is true during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood for the prevention of asthma in early life. The increased prevalence of asthma in recent decades has paralleled changes in environmental exposures and dietary patterns that likely are contributing factors in asthma pathogenesis. Obesity can lead to chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, hormonal changes, insulin resistance, and all these factors have been investigated in asthma. In this article, we explore these themes and others, including the potential for modern nutrition approaches that emphasize the health benefits of specific nutrients, as well as dietary patterns, in asthma. The article includes discussions on vitamin D, probiotics, antioxidants, dietary n-3 PUFA, and specific amino acids and weighs the potential of each as a potential therapeutic in asthma." @default.
