- W4313140848 abstract "In our daily life, we make any decision every moment. An appropriate and flexible decision is essential to acquire better and appropriate solutions against various and unpredictable problems and is also important to survive in the natural and social environment around us. When we make a decision, this decision is executed often based on some specific information. For example, when we visit a convenience store and try to get a drink, we may select a particular drink based on the information acquired before (e.g., information obtained from a talk with a friend or a TV advertisement) or based on our own preference or by chance. We often make a decision to select an item based on specific information acquired from a TV advertisement, for example, but we do not know whether we prefer it or not. This type of decision-making can be called memory-based decision-making. On the other hand, we make a decision to select an item based on our own preference (like or dislike) or experience (had high or low value). This type of decision-making can be called value-based decision-making. Further, we sometime select an item which we know nothing about our preference for it and its actual value or need to select one item among same items, or select an item by chance. This type of decision-making can be called free-choice decision-making, because we can use neither our memory, preference, nor experience to select an item. In the experimental situation, perceptual decision-making, decision-making in competitive condition, and decision-making in conflict conditions have also been used to examine neural mechanisms of decision-making. The prefrontal cortex has been shown to contribute to these decision-making processes significantly." @default.
