• W4313153463 abstract "The chapter explores pedagogy and materials development for a content-based module on the internationalization of higher education (IHE). Firstly, the subject area is a relatively new one that has been developing rapidly in the last two decades. Secondly, the target skill is expository writing within an existing framework. The chapter describes the process of how content and writing pedagogy encompassing reading and writing about contexts, case studies and controversies was facilitated. Under contexts, students examined the commonalities in the chosen paths of internationalising entities (regions, countries, institutions), and the rationales, approaches and strategies of IHE (Engwall, 2016; Knight, 2004). Students were next encouraged to analyse and apply knowledge from selected readings on case studies, surveying the perspectives of various stakeholders, e.g., international students, faculty, policy makers at institutional and national levels (Daquila, 2013; Hong, 2018). Students then moved on to conduct primary research on a situated challenge or controversy that resonates with them. They compared and contrasted the primary data to secondary data from literature before writing an expository paper built on their thesis (Knight, 2013; Ng, 2012). The chapter explores how students were supported by instruction, modelling, and practice on the different genres and guided through a constructive process of assignments (Hyland, 2008). The chapter presents findings by drawing on final papers on topics of the students’ concerns such as identity formation of ASEAN international students in Singapore Higher Education (HE), the impact of MOOCs on IHE, and stakeholders’ perspectives on English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). In invited, voluntary reflections, students cited gains in content knowledge and its application as well as writing development. My own reflections indicate the need to constantly update the reading list to keep pace with the evolving IHE landscape and to include more theoretical underpinnings for teaching a content-centric module. The topic of how global crises impact IHE should also be added. More of these ongoing critical reflections to fine-tune the module for the next cohort of students will be shared in the conclusions." @default.
