- W4313162711 abstract "“I SHOULD like to enjoy life by choosing all its highest instances, to give back in my means of expression all that it gives to me: to give in form and color the reactions that plastic objects and sensations of light from within and without have reflected from my inner consciousness … . My wish is … not to revolutionize nor to reform, but to enjoy life out loud.”Dove wrote these words in 1916 for the Forum Exhibition catalogue. Today they are as true as then; if ever an artist was instinct with joy, that man is Dove. A Marin sparkles, but with witty, classical mirth. A Dove laughs like sunlight or waves or running dogs, or like wind rippling through wheat—only there is no wheat to speak of around Geneva, New York, where Dove now lives and where he spent his youth as son of the town's brick manufacturer, builder and public-spirited patron of local industry. Dove as a painter starts with the place of which he wrote in 1933: “This Geneva is amazing to us… . Our Italian neighbor says, ‘She's a dead country’ We want to get somewhere on the salt water.” Throughout his life (Dove is fifty-seven) he has been held by strange ties to his home town, seeking to cut the bonds, never quite getting free, drawn back at last to the scene of his boyhood. In this respect, the history of Dove and the Dove family in Geneva is an American saga." @default.
