- W4313171047 abstract "Inherent-complement verbs (ICVs) are very pervasive in some Kwa languages. They obligatorily co-occur with complements without which they may not have any independent and recognizable meaning or at best will be semantically vague and incomplete. This Chapter provides a descriptive analysis of Ibibio (New Benue Congo) ICVs. It examines and classifies ICVs in Ibibio comparing them with lexical transitive verbs (LTVs) in the language. Also, using some syntactic evidence such as imperativization, pronominalization, topicalization, focusing and discourse pronominalization, the status of Ibibio inherent complements (ICs) is examined as either ‘true’ objects or mere semantic components of their respective ICVs. Data for the study were collected by elicitation from some adult competent speakers of Ibibio in Uyo, who were selected through stratified random sampling. Findings reveal that, some Ibibio ICVs can be transitive while others are intransitive. Just as in the Igbo language (Anyanwu in Theory and Practices in Language Studies 8:1561–1569, Anyanwu, Theory and Practices in Language Studies 8:1561–1569, 2012), there is only a semantic bond between ICs and their ICVs in Ibibio. Unlike, objects of LTVs, Ibibio ICs are verbal semantic ingredients of ICVs without which the ICVs lose their semantic transparency. Based on the syntactic behavior of Ibibio ICs, we conclude that they are not ‘true’ objects in the sense of ‘affected’ objects of LTVs." @default.
