- W4313194957 abstract "An ocean of evidence points toward feasibility of applying gene therapy-based methods to manifest a prolonged remedial impact. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) continue to prove to be propitious in cell-based and gene-based therapies. The advantage drawn is progression of stem cells in a niche environment leading to differentiating along multiple lineages and demonstrating a substantial augmentation capacity. Research in this area points out that these stem cells can be used as vectors for therapeutic purposes. In this chapter, we aim to highlight characteristics and treatments of MSCs that make them suitable vectors in suicide gene therapy. Techniques such as transduction using various transgene delivery methods help integrate genes of interest. Additionally, tissue-specific targeting of genetically engineered MSCs proves to propagate curative qualities based on niche conditions. A spectrum of enzyme/prodrug systems attributes to deliver the MSCs such as HSV-tk system combined with prodrug Ganciclovir. Recent strategy of utilizing MSCs in cancer treatment is under clinical trials. Approaching with MSCs has proven to be successful in many of the mice models." @default.
