- W4313232824 abstract "Introduction: Resuscitation of hospitalized pediatric patients requires effective team performance. Many interventions have been proposed to optimize code team performance, yet their addition may result in increasing team member workload during a code event. Research measuring workload during resuscitation has predominantly occurred in simulated rather than actual arrests. We sought to assess the feasibility of measuring workload of code team members in real code events, and to analyze the patterns of workload. Methods: A survey was developed based on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) to measure workload, the stress numerical rating scale-11 (SNRS-11) to measure stress, and an additional question about noise level during the code event. Codes included respiratory and/or compression events. We collected data from 61 participants at 15 different code events including code leader data from 8 events. A Quality CPR Coach was present for 4 events. This sample represents 24% of total compression events during the study period. Analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney U test. Results: There was no difference in overall workload between code leaders and other team members (p = 0.601). There was higher mental demand in code leaders compared to other team members (p = 0.025). Code leaders trended toward higher mental demand (p = 0.064) compared to compressors, who had significantly higher physical demand compared to code leaders (p = 0.018). Code leaders reported their performance was lower (p = 0.048) for events with a Quality CPR Coach present compared to those without. Regarding feasibility, capture of workload data was more likely if a member of the study team was available at the time of the code event. Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to measure the workload of healthcare professionals during real life code events. This study demonstrates the feasibility of obtaining team data immediately following events which can provide valuable information to better study and characterize the workloads of different team members. Further research in this area would be important to better understand the effect of different interventions (including role assignments) and identify opportunities to maximize team performance." @default.
