- W4313254845 abstract "This work presents a highly stable switchable and tunable multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) manufactured with a segment of select cutoff fiber (SCF). The MZI was implemented by using the waist-enlarged technique, splicing one section of a SCF between two pieces of single mode fibers (SMFs). Here, the core and the cladding of the SCF central segment act like the MZI arms, whereas the waist-enlarged splices act as optical couplers. This MZI was used as a wavelength selective filter (WSF) component of a tunable laser. A single laser emission was tuned from 1554.56 to1559.44 nm changing the temperature of the MZI from 25 to 108 °C. Moreover, above 108 °C the laser emission switches from one single emission at 1552.49 nm, having a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of ∼ 55.3 dB and linewidth of 0.052 nm, to a dual emission located at 1550.79 and 1559.63 nm, reaching a high SMSRs of 52 and 56 dB, and linewidths ∼ 0.024 and 0.052 nm. The laser operation stability was tested over 60 min, showing power and wavelength fluctuations less than 1.344 dB and 0.1479 nm, respectively. The laser was linearly tuned from 1552.42 nm to 1557.55 nm by applying curvature onto the MZI, and could be switched to the L-band, specifically to 1567.21 nm, with enough curvature. Additionally, the laser presents a single, double, or triple line, which can be switched from 1529.36 to 1558.8 nm by adjusting the polarization controller. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the waist-enlarged technique and the select-cutoff fiber have been used in an MZI-based WSF. Finally, this arrangement can be implemented using a manual splicer, offering a compact, straightforward, and low-cost alternative TEDFL for communication and spectroscopy applications." @default.
