- W4313307601 abstract "Nowadays, the use of heuristic optimisations applied to the design of complex mechanical systems and, in general, to solve engineering problems is increasingly widespread. Their ability to approach, formulate and solve multi-objective problems has accelerated their use even within the sailboat industry, which is known to be inert to the use of alternative design methodologies. In this work, a genetic algorithm is proposed to address the design of a hydrofoil system applicable to both sail and motor boats. The aim is to provide a precise and multi-objective decision tool as support for boat design. The presented method studies the main hydrofoil parameters and finds suitable solutions to avoid unsatisfactory boat performances. The paper pursues the derivation of the numerical framework behind the optimization problem and presents some optimization results. The main aim is to develop a preliminary, optimal, fast and systemic design tool applied to hydrofoil systems and proof its effectiveness and impact into the design process of a boat." @default.
