- W4313315085 abstract "Studies suggest the innate and adaptive immune systems play a major role in controlling severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. The virus initially infects via the nasal epithelium, progresses from the nasopharynx to the lungs, and can lead to multiorgan systemic infection. The innate response is nonspecific to the pathogen and composed of barriers such as enzymes, epithelial cells, and cytokines, including interferon and interleukin-1. The adaptive immune system, composed of CD4/CD8 T cells, B cells, and antibodies, is critical to control most viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. This chapter highlights the immune response to the virus and ways that immune dysregulation, known as cytokine storm, plays a role in the pathophysiology of the virus. In addition, this chapter discusses novel approved and experimental immunologic therapeutics to mitigate the cytokine storm and neutralize the virus." @default.
