- W4313317032 abstract "The research on negative transfer with respect to L2 proficiency and the instruction of pragmatics is reviewed. While overall evidence demonstrates that negative transfer decreases with gains in L2 proficiency, more detailed findings suggest negative transfer also varies according to status, individual strategies, and content. For instance, the negative transfer of language use related to status is more frequent among beginning learners and thus consistent with prevailing research. In contrast, research also shows that advanced learners capable of expressing target‐like individual strategies transfer L1 cultural norms. The negative transfer of content increases with L2 proficiency and varies between collectivist and non‐collectivist cultures. Research into the instruction of pragmatics is dominated by learners at the intermediate levels with relatively little to say about the instruction of beginning or advanced learners. Implications for instruction of students at all levels are given as well as what can be expected in terms of negative transfer." @default.
