- W4313342802 abstract "Climate change (CC) is an urgent and complex issue and has been identified as one of the major societal challenges facing the world today. Ozone is one of the players in CC and is considered the most phytotoxic air pollutant to which wild, forest, and cultivated plants are exposed, by leading to yield reduction and changes in food quality, not to mention the impact on natural ecosystems. These adverse effects are the result of functional and genic alterations which finally result in (1) reduction in the net photosynthetic assimilation, (2) variation in the carbohydrate allocation pattern, and (3) induction of premature senescence. Plant responses to O3 elicitation share several physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes that start from the beginning of the exposure to the onset of visible injuries, including the accumulation of phytohormones (e.g., ethylene and abscisic acid) or signal molecules like salicylic and jasmonic acids, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and proline. As a consequence of CC, during the last decade, several studies have been demonstrated the influence of O3 in plants related to other environmental stress (e.g., drought, salinity). This chapter will provide recent updates on current understanding of the intriguous cross talk among phytohormones, signaling molecules, and other second messengers in response to O3, single or in combination with other major CC-related stressors." @default.
