Anaerobic digestion stands out as a technology that combines the treatment of swine manure with the production of biogas and digestate. The digestate can be reused inside the installations in a circular system. Covered lagoon biodigester (CLB) and full mixed covered lagoon biodigester (FMCLB) are largely used in Brazil and have different operations, efficiencies, deployment and maintenance costs, and return rates. This chapter presents a comparison of biogas production efficiency and an analysis of the operation of CLB and FMCLB-type digesters used for effluent treatment of swine production units in southern Brazil. During 700 days, the digesters were monitored with periodic analysis of alkalinity, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), fixed solids (FS), sedimentable solids (SS) and sulfate, with samples collected at the entrance and exit of each biodigester. Although CLB biodigesters had better COD removal rates (70.62% versus 64.49%), they achieved statistically similar methane production (63.64 ± 10.25% versus 55.45 ± 4.80%). Considering the higher initial investment and the higher maintenance cost of FMCP and the methane production capacity of both systems, it can be considered that the use of CLB systems is more advantageous for the treatment of swine manure." @default.
