- W4313353043 abstract "Phytochemicals serve as rich reservoirs of candidates for drug molecules. However, the complexities due to their chemical composition are forming an inextricable barrier concerning the advancement of herbal medicine. The development of metabolomics has brought a paradigm shift in the approaches that we use to characterize these chemical compounds, making the bioactive molecules as the potential lead compounds for drug development. Metabolomics involves the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of varied metabolites synthesized in tissues and living beings. Various strategies are employed in the field of metabolomics in order to get a comprehensive image of the chemical constitution of medicinal plants with respect to various plant parts, age, geographical regions, interspecies, or ecotype. Recent advancements in the MS- and NMR-based analytical platforms have led to the emergence of metabolomic profiling. The methodologies further utilize multivariate analysis to statistically handle the extensive volume of analytical chemistry data. Databases that organize metabolomics data from medicinal plants are formulated, which aid in storage and analysis and also help the modeling of metabolism in species, which are less studied. Meanwhile, metabolomics works without any preselection, which qualitatively and quantitatively characterizes all measurable metabolites as well as novel compounds, with specific bioactivities that can also be discovered. Besides, plant metabolomics has unraveled biosynthetic pathways of many natural compounds, aided in quality checks of herbal formulations and toxicity assessment; this helps to standardize the herbal formulations suitable for marketing." @default.
