- W4313353761 abstract "In livestock farming, veterinary antibiotics are being given routinely worldwide, and during the coming years, this use is likely to increase by more than 60%. The rates of excretion of various antibiotics and their fate during different treatments have been briefly overviewed in this chapter. The organisms which are treated are found to excrete <5% up to 90% of the active constituents, depending on the substance, thus resulting in animal wastes containing antibiotic residues. These antibiotics in the manure can affect the yield of methane and biogas by entering in the procedure as manure is used in the biogas plants as a substrate. Various studies related to anaerobic digestion were undertaken and different results were obtained. During manure treatment, including storage, anaerobic digestion and composting, the fate of many antibiotics such as tetracyclines, sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones was examined in various setups and composting showed the highest elimination rates (up to >99%). On the basis of reported transformation products of various antibiotics, for most compounds, degradation cannot be assumed. Only a little change in the structure was witnessed in many cases and several transformation products were still active microbiologically. Therefore, manure treatments should not be evaluated based only on the disappearing of the parent compound. Inclusive studies should comprise the explanation of removal pathways to recognize efficient procedures for decreasing the input of antibiotics into the environment." @default.
