This is an inevitable phenomenon of the urbanization process, land being required for the construction of buildings and infrastructure facilities. An excessive use of natural resources and improper management of the watershed ultimately affects large areas and results in land degradation and floods. Soil erosion is directly related to land use/land cover change. However, little attention is being paid to the interactions between urbanization and soil erosion in developing countries, including Nepal. This study seeks to assess the relations between urbanization and soil erosion processes in Kathmandu Valley from 1990 to 2019. Analogue map and image data were collected from different public sources. Soil properties data were derived from the soil samples collected in the field. Field verification was carried out in the valley’s northeastern part. The RUSLE model was used for the estimation of soil erosion rate, for which the valley was divided into valley floor and hill slope on the basis of its landform and elevation. The study revealed that the valley floor has a decreasing rate of bare soil surface due to the growth of the built-up area by urbanization, whilst the hill slope has an increasing rate of bare soil surface due to the quarrying of materials for the construction of buildings and other infrastructures, occurring haphazardly over the years. This is a major cause of increasing soil loss in the marginal hill slope areas. Field investigation identified that river siltation and river deepening in the foothill areas have caused floods and landslides, which has affected the peripheral areas of the city, damaging infrastructures and urban agricultural lands.
