- W4313367928 abstract "Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Tumor metastasis is the most common cause of death in breast cancer. In view of the high mortality in breast cancer patients, there is a need to identify new prognostic biomarkers. IMP3 has a role in induction of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and SLUG is an EMT marker. Both of these have been implicated in cancer metastasis. Hence, IMP3 and SLUG in breast might prove to be potential therapeutic targets in the future. This was a retrospective study conducted on 60 breast carcinoma cases in a tertiary care center in North India using tissue microarrays. Demographic and clinicopathological details were recorded. Immunohistochemistry for IMP3 and SLUG was performed. Their IHC expression was evaluated in terms of percentage cell-positivity and semi-quantitatively for intensity of staining (weak= 1, moderate= 2 and strong= 3). Data was recorded on a pre-designed proforma and analyzed. IMP3 positivity was found in 87% and SLUG positivity was found in 90% breast carcinoma cases. IMP3 positivity was significantly associated with tumor size (p = 0.03) and TNM stage (p = 0.024). IMP3 staining intensity showed significant association with tumor histological grade (p = 0.009), TNM stage (p = 0.036) and molecular subtype (p = 0.03). SLUG immunoexpression was significantly associated with TNM stage (p = 0.006) and its staining intensity showed significant association with age (p = 0.025) and TNM stage (p = 0.004). A highly significant association (p <0.001) was found between IMP3 and SLUG positivity and staining intensities (p <0.001). Significant correlation was also found between IMP3 and SLUG percentage cell positivities (p <0.001). Significant association of immunoexpression of IMP3 and SLUG with TNM stage proves them to be poor prognostic markers. Also, significant positive correlation between IMP3 and SLUG highlights their proposed role in tumor invasiveness and aggressiveness via EMT in breast carcinomas. Hence, IMP3 and SLUG-based targeted therapies might prove to be useful in treatment of breast carcinoma." @default.
