- W4313373970 abstract "AbstractThe coastline of West Bengal is an outstanding marvel because of its delineation with the coastal flora on the lap of the Bay of Bengal. The coastal flora act like a green wall that saves people from the strong wind actions and storm surges due to the consecutive strikes of the cyclonic storms. The coastal vegetation of West Bengal is of mixed nature comprising the rows of casuarina and mangroves. Naturally grown-up casuarina tree lines along the state’s coastlines were destroyed by the frequent strikes of the cyclonic storms as well as by human interferences in the last century. At present, the coastal vegetation of the well-known sea resorts like Bakkhali-Fraserganj, Ganga Sagar, Digha-Shankarpur is covered with the treelines due to afforestation under the social forestry scheme, though mangroves grow naturally in these areas. Among mangroves, only three dominant species are observed in the well-known sea resorts except in the Sunderbans where 64 mangroves and associated species are identified. Apart from casuarina trees, a large number of Sonajhuri/Akashmani trees are planted in the Digha-Shankarpur coastal zone. Coastal vegetation patterns with floral diversity control the coastal morphology and evolution, as well as mark the coastal configurations by their luxuriant appearances. Apart from the coastal tree lines, herbaceous vegetation like creepers and grasses helps for the stabilization of the sand dunes along the coastal tract of West Bengal.KeywordsDune vegetationCasuarina tree linesMangrovesMangrove associated species" @default.
