- W4313377306 abstract "Reviewed by: For Lamb by Cline-Lesa Ransome Kate Quealy-Gainer Cline-Ransome, Lesa For Lamb. Holiday House, 2023 [304p] Trade ed. ISBN 9780823450152 $18.99 E-book ed. ISBN 9780823455034 $11.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 5-8 Life in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1940 isn’t especially easy for a Black family, but it’s home for teenaged Lamb, her older brother Simeon, and their Momma. Simeon is ready to head north for college and hopefully a life less segregated, but a doubtful Momma knows he’ll find just as much trouble up there, and she’s not about to let him take her beloved Lamb with him. Their constant bickering leaves Lamb always on edge, so when she meets Marny, a white girl with whom she shares a love of books, the two begin to meet in secret despite Lamb’s better judgment. They’re of course discovered, leading to a series of violent events, including Marny’s older brother sexually assaulting Lamb and a group of white townsmen lynching Lamb’s mother. Lamb’s sweet, interior narration opens the book, and readers would be forgiven in thinking this a domestic drama about a family with struggles but high hopes. As more voices are added to the narrative—Simeon, Momma, Lamb’s loving uncle, and her estranged father—systemic racism and its resulting intergenerational trauma are brought into sharp, painful relief, and it seems almost foolish to believe Lamb and her family could ever leave—or even live—unscathed. The worst of the violence is mainly offscreen, an authorial choice that tries, mostly successfully, to strike the balance of acknowledging racial violence without exploiting it for dramatic effect. An author’s note discusses how Cline-Ransome’s visit to the Legacy Museum and Memorial (informally known as the Lynching Memorial) served as a catalyst to tell a story focusing particularly on the violence against Black women during and post-Jim Crow.
